An airport shuttle driver was struck by an allegedly drunken man driving the wrong way on the Long Island Expressway over the Fourth of July weekend, and subsequently died, sources told a New York Injury Lawyer.
The 64-year-old shuttle driver, of Greenlawn, was pronounced dead at New York Hospital Medical Center in Queens, where his family had been waiting all morning to learn of his fate, a family friend told a New York Car Accident Lawyer.
“Everybody’s devastated,” said the family friend. A law enforcement source has informed New York Injury Lawyers that the suspected drunken driver’s charges are likely to be upgraded, since someone died in the accident.
The suspect has not yet been arraigned on any charges because he is still in the hospital, a spokeswoman for a Queens district attorney told a New York Personal Car Accident Lawyer. According to official sources, the suspect has already been charged with vehicular assault, drunken driving, and reckless endangerment.
After the crash, both victim and suspect were hospitalized just a few beds away from each other. The shuttle driver had been going to pick up passengers to take to the airport, said the driver’s son-in-law. He was the only one in the vehicle at the time of the crash.
