On the Interchange between 42 in Geneva and 43 in Manchester was no the place to be when a dump truck driven by a 49 year old man of Nine Mile Point Road in Oswego hit a bridge. Apparently the driver didn’t realize that his truck bed was raised and it wasn’t equipped with a tilt bed warning light which would it alert the driver of a raised bed. The back of the dump truck hit the bridge and came loose from the truck and landed in the eastbound lane. A drunk driver is a dangerous driver and a drunken cab driver makes the combination even more deadly. A minivan which was traveling the wrong way on the Taconic Parkway caused a terrible accident killing eight people, including a woman and four children.

Investigator Joseph Becerra said the minivan was traveling southbound when it struck an SUV and burst into flames. This was the second on the parkway in which a vehicle was going in the wrong direction. More people were hurt in an early morning collision between two cars, one of which was going north in the southbound lane. The second accident happened north of the first. A taxi driver caused a hit and run car accident in Kew Gardens, Queens NY. The driver was driving at the intersection of Union Turnpike and Vleigh Place when he caused the accident. New York City taxi officials have passed a new law that all taxi cab drivers will have to follow. An older law bans all cell phone use while driving. The new law takes it one step further for taxi drivers. They will not be allowed to use a hands-free device while driving. Even having the device in their ear can warrant a ticket. The law also bans any GPS that is not voice enabled, and anything capable of sending a text message, playing music or taking pictures while driving. A cab must be pulled over and parked, not just stopped, to use any of electronic devices. This ban applies to all vehicles regulated by the Taxi and Limousine Commission (TLC) including commuter vans and liveries. It is TLC’s effort to cut down on talking while driving and forcing drivers to pay more attention to the roads, and to pedestrians. Any driver caught using an electronic device while driving with face steep penalties on the first offense. One woman was exercising her abilities as a Good Samaritan when she stopped one Sunday afternoon to help a victim in car accident. While attempting to help the driver of a gray Subaru wagon that had simply slipped off of a wet and icy road. While she and others tried to help, a van slid off the road, collided with the Subaru and pushed it on top of the woman. Multiple automobiles involved in a crash take the lives of two victims and injures another. The accident occurred just as the rush hour was getting started and investigated as none of the vehicles left skid marks behind. Five teenagers were pronounced dead at the scene and one who was flown to Royal Adelaid Hospital later died from head injuries. Seven other teenagers were listed as stable but in critical condition. Apparently the driver of the auto, a 34-year-old man, fled the scene on foot, leaving his own ten-year-old daughter and four-year-old son in the car. The driver was later arrested and taken in for questioning. In the early hours of the morning, a man was apparently walked out in front of a Semi Truck traveling on the highway. The pedestrian was a twenty-two year old and he was hit by a United Parcel Service tractor-trailer. The young man’s body was found on the interstate and he was declared on the scene. An eighteen-year-old student at Northeastern was killed in a crash on New Year’s Day in upstate New York.
