A young former Manhattan resident was struck by a yellow taxi cab this past week. Alison Cassani grew up in New York City, but has lived in Rome. She came back to New York with her mother for the holidays. Cassani was crossing on 34th Street between Third Avenue and Second Avenue when a taxi cab struck her. She was rushed to Bellevue Hospital; located at 462 First Ave. New York, NY 10116. She suffered numerous injury from the accident, some of which were very serious. She received numerous fractures to her ribs, pelvis and skull. She also suffered brain trauma. Reports indicate there are no charges for DWIfiled against the driver of the taxi yet. After her mother’s car was rear ended in a 3-car collision in East Flatbush 6 year old Brooklyn resident finds herself in critical condition at Brookdale University Hospital and Medical center. The 6 year old was in the car with her mother and 2 year old sister who were also injured. The women along with the 2 girls were driving east on Avenue I and stopped after they were rear ended by the SUV on Flatlands Avenue. The car struck another after they were pushed into the intersection because of the impact.

A five car accident seriously injuries two people in Bushwick. The cause, Speeding. A Mercedes was seen speeding down Wyckoff Avenue as it mowed a Honda. The man driving the Honda, who was slammed into 3 parked cars, was saved by a witness. As the driver screamed for help flames took over his vehicle. One of the men involved in the accident was able to escape his vehicle on his own. The Mercedes crashed into a pole a few blocks downs and a pedestrian was killed by a motorist. The body of Elmer Mendez, 32 years old of Shirley, the pedestrian wasn’t found until 10 hours after the accident. He was found on Montauk Highway in Yaphank, Suffolk.

30 Year old Jose Ramos of Valley Stream, New York was killed during a drag race between him Hector Manuel Velasquez Macedo a 28 year old resident of Baldwin and Denis Cardona a 33 year old resident of Freeport. The three men were involved in a racing contest on the Wantagh State Parkway which caused Ramos 2002 Chevy Impala to hit a tree as he headed south on the parkway. Speed was most definitely a cause of accident. Both Hector Manuel Velasquez Macedo and Denis Cardona were arrested and are facing manslaughter charges due to Ramos’ death. They were charged with second degree manslaughter, second degree reckless endangerment and aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle.

John Palermo a 27 year old Rochester, NY native was killed in a car crash that occurred in North Hollywood. The accident also took the life of his girlfriend who was driving the car, her brother who was also a passenger in the vehicle sustained a few injuries but is expected to live. Apparently she lost control of the vehicle and hit a few parking meters, light pole and a building. There was no evidence that a DWI was involved. They died at the scene. Persi Esquival, a 47 year old Valley Stream, Long Island resident, was already on probation for being convicted of DWI 2006. Esquival had attended a party hosted by the Diocese of Rockville Centre at the Hempstead Union Free School District building earlier that night. He then left the party and was driving his SUV when he crossed over into oncoming traffic. His truck hit the car being driven by 21 year old Jason Shein and three friends. Reports show that everyone in Shein’s car suffered injury. One person, whose name has not been revealed, suffered a serious injury. Shein’s injury was fatal. Esquival blood alcohol contect was three times the legal limit. He was arrested for numerous charges including aggravated vehicular manslaughter and driving while intoxicated. He was sentenced to 21 years in prison. Shein’s family has also filed a lawsuit against Esquival’s insurance carrier. They also filed suit against the Diocese of Rockville Center and Hempstead Union Free School District for allowing a patron of their party to get so intoxicated.

Rev. Timothy Wright’s wife, Betty Wright was killed by a wrong way driver on the Pennsylvania Highway. There grandson, who was also in the care was in critical condition and later pronounced dead at Geisinger Medical Center. An oil leak occurred in a building on Division Street near the Melville Road and Main Street intersection in Farmingdale NY about 30 minutes after a Suffolk Yellow Cab crashed into the establishment. Homes and businesses around the area were urged to vacate the premises. As a 1st Grader rode his Razor Scooter on Bleeker Street near Central and Wilson Avenues in Manhattan, New York he became the victim as two speeding cars trampled him. Shami Chaikin, a 78 year old Manhattan NY resident, was riding her mobile scooter in the designated bike lane in Greenwich Village when a garbage truck. Chaikin was known to ride her mobility scooter around the city. Officials report that the truck was not in its designated place when it struck the elderly woman on Eighth Avenue between Bleeker Strett and West 12th Street. Chaikin suffered much injury and was rushed to St. Vincent’s Hospital; located at 170 West 12th Street New York, NY 10011. New York Police have not released the type of injury Chaikin suffered, but have said that she is in critical condition. DWI was not charged.
