An online petition has been started to convince the Suffolk district attorney to upgrade charges against a driver who killed two Connetquot High School students in an accident, New York Injury Lawyers have learned. Police say this driver had a revoked license at the time of the crash.
The petition gained nearly 800 signatures in the first few days. The woman who started the petition was a friend of the families of the slain high school students, and says that the petition was signed by family, friends, and friends-of-friends of the boys who died in the crash – a 17-year-old from Oakdale, and a 16-year-old from Sayville. “This is unique,” a professor of media studies told a New York Car Accident Lawyer. “I’ve heard of social media used for social causes, for holding public officials accountable, for helping advocate for or against an issue. I’ve not encountered one where people are trying to influence a case.”
Suffolk police have told New York Injury Lawyers that the 28-year-old Selden man who was driving the fatal vehicle was charged with third-degree aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle, which carries a maximum punishment of 30 days in jail, authorities told a New York Injury Lawyer. A spokesman for the district attorney would not tell New York Car Accident Lawyers if the petition would have any effect on the charges being brought forward.
