New York City taxi officials have passed a new law that all taxi cab drivers will have to follow. An older law bans all cell phone use while driving. The new law takes it one step further for taxi drivers. They will not be allowed to use a hands-free device while driving. Even having the device in their ear can warrant a ticket. The law also bans any GPS that is not voice enabled, and anything capable of sending a text message, playing music or taking pictures while driving. A cab must be pulled over and parked, not just stopped, to use any of electronic devices. This ban applies to all vehicles regulated by the Taxi and Limousine Commission (TLC) including commuter vans and liveries. It is TLC’s effort to cut down on talking while driving and forcing drivers to pay more attention to the roads, and to pedestrians. Any driver caught using an electronic device while driving with face steep penalties on the first offense.
