A Mitsubishi driving down Montauk Highway caused a fatal car accident in Copiague, New York. The car, driven by a 25 year old Lindenhurst resident, was heading east on Montauk Highway near Miramar Boulevard when it lost control and swerved into oncoming traffic. The car had 4 people inside when it struck a minivan, causing a fatal injury to the driver. Two of the passengers of the Mitsubishi also suffered fatal injury. The rest of the passengers of the minivan and Mitsubishi were taken to Good Samaritan Hospital; located at 1000 Montauk Highway, West Islip NY 11795. Reports did not release the type of injury the other passengers suffered, except that one passenger sustained a brain injury. Suffolk County Police have not stated if criminal charges will be filed against the driver.

Richard Barton, an East Northport resident was struck by a minivan while walking down Pulaski Road in East Northport, NY. Pulaski Road is also known as County Route 11 in Suffolk County. It stretches from Cold Spring Harbor to Kings Park and runs parallel to the Long Island Rail Road for most of the towns. Barton was struck by Vinton Simms, also an East Northport resident. Barton suffered a fatal injury at the time of the accident. Suffolk County Police have not stated whether criminal charges will be filed against Simms.

Former NYC cop Howard Safir was accused of backing his Cadillac SUV into a pregnant woman in Manhattan and fleeing the scene. The pregnant woman was taken to a hospital and treated for a bruised shoulder. A New York Fire Department ambulance killed an elderly woman as she pushed a grocery cart across an intersection. The ambulance was on its way to transport a patient to Brooklyn Hospital. The ambulance had its lights and sirens in use as it raced down Bay 22nd St towards Lutheran Medical Center located on 150 55th Street in Brooklyn. It was not known if the ambulance went through a red light. The victim was believed to be in her 80’s. No charges of DWI were brought by the authorities.

It was early in the afternoon during a festival celebrating the fifth day of Hanukkah in Woodmere, NY when an SUV lost control and caused a horrific accident. The festival, called “Chanukah Wonderland”, is meant to teach children the meaning of the holiday. There were already over 100 people in the building during the time of the accident. The driver of the car is a 76 year old man from Atlantic Beach, which is also part of Nassau County. He lost control of his SUV, careening into oncoming traffic where he hit another automobile. He then drove through the building on Broadway into the festival. Nassau County Police have not determined what caused the crash. Many festival goers suffered injury, ranging from lacerations to blunt force trauma. One man sustained serious injury when the SUV flipped over onto him. Reports do not list his injury, but did state it was not fatal. Fourteen people in total sustained injury. They were rushed to Withrop University Medical Center; located at 259 First Street Mineola NY 11501, and Nassau University Medical Center; located at 2201 Hempstead Turnpike, East Meadow, NY 11554 for treatment. The driver of the SUV was also treated for shock. He is not facing any criminal charges.

It was late in the evening when a man was driving on the Belt Parkway near Bay Ridge, NY. Reports indicate the car was speeding on the Belt Parkway with Brooklyn residents three people in the car. Former Police Commissioner Howard Safir has been accused of backing into a pedestrian and driving off. Safir was the commissioner of the New York City Police Department from 1996-2000. Three teenagers were on a late night ride when the driver lost control. Suffolk County Police report that the three teenagers were driving on Sandra Drive in Hauppauge. The teen driving the vehicle lost control of the car and crashed into a tree. Suffolk County Police and Smithtown Fire Department responded to the call after the accident. Firefighters had to cut of the passengers from the wrecked car. He was taken St. Catherine’s of Siena Medical Center; located at 50 Route 25A, Smithtown, NY 11787. His injury was fatal. The two others in the car were taken to Stony Brook University Medical Center to be treated for their injury. No police charges of DWI have been filed of yet.

Former NBC news anchor Tom Brokaw was involved in a multi-car crash on the Bruckner Expressway in the Bronx, NY. The expressways stretched from the Robert F. Kennedy Bridge to the New England Thruway. Brokaw and his wife were driving in the Bronx when the accident occurred. Police report that a SUV was trying to avoid cables on the expressway and lost control. The SUV crashed into a mail truck, which then hit the car Brokaw and his wife were driving in. Kings County Police report that a drunk driver had a blood alcohol content of .132, more than twice the legal limit when he crashed into Brian Rosario and Elizabeth Lopez on West Avenue and Ocean Parkway. The two were walking to Abraham Lincoln high School; located at 2800 Ocean Parkway, Brooklyn NY 11224. Lopez suffered multiple injury including head trauma and a broken jaw bone. She was taken to Coney Island Hospital; located at 2601 Ocean Parkway, Brooklyn NY 11235. Lopez suffered a less severe injury. He was taken to Lutheran Medical Center; located at 150 55th Street, Brooklyn NY 11220; where he was treated for a broken leg. Reports do not indicate if the driver suffered an injury. He was arrested at the scene of the accident and faces numerous charges including Felony Vehicular Assault, Aggravated Unlicensed Operation of a Vehicle and Driving While Intoxicated. He was held in Kings County Supreme Court where bail was remanded.
